Anatomy of an Aura Painting

This blog post is based on my experience with energy and auras, and the way that I intuitively paint auras. Everything may not resonate with how you interpret or experience auras, and that’s part of what makes it so fascinating!
If you’re new here, welcome! I’m Courtney Deerborn. I paint auras, read tarot, and am a reiki practitioner. I began studying the aura in 2014 and first offered aura paintings to the public through Etsy in 2020. Since then, I’ve share my work at local markets, psychic fairs, shops, private parties, and through e-mail.
Your aura watercolor is painted so that looking at it is like looking into a mirror.
The left side of the artwork corresponds with the left side of your body, and likewise with the right.
The Foundation
The bottom portion of your aura painting is where we hold the past. The color is first influenced by your Soul personality and spiritual gifts. It can give insight into your mission or purpose in this current chapter of life.
The colors you see in your foundation also correspond to your roots. This represents your groundedness and connection to the world itself. Colors here indicate how you stand in reality and where you feel you fit in. They can give insight into your relationship with yourself.
The foundation forms through the childhood and teenage years, and tend to be consistent through a lifetime. I have seen the colors of this section flip between 2-3 colors over the length of a year at a time, usually shifting with the seasons.
A drastic shift in your foundation can take place with things like big lifestyle changes, a far move in location, a traumatic experience, and/or meaningful healing and release. Sometimes Soul lessons or awakenings change the color.
The Present
Colors in the very top of your aura create the halo we’ve observed in art depictions of Angels and Holy figures. People can express this auric feature into the physical in times of great emotion, such as the love felt when holding your child for the first time, the compassion felt when giving an energy healing, or deep authentic laughter.
The top of your aura is made up of energy in the very present moment. The colors can shift within seconds along with your thoughts and ideas. This section can offer a glimpse into your intentions and how well they’re manifesting into reality. Sometimes, current projects or obligations show up here. Sometimes we see a person or pet appear as a spiritual figure in color. Things you’re going through, building, and dreaming are represented by your upper colors!
Learning about your present energy helps you sort through what you’re truly thinking and feeling. It can give you perspective on whether you’re living in alignment with what you truly want for yourself. This section helps you understand the energy and intentions you could be subconsciously putting out into the world.
The Left: Inner World
The left half of your body energetically deals with yourself and your inner world. This section offers insight into your personal development and deeper emotions, helping you better reflect on what truly matters to you.
This is where the shadow is likely to appear, especially in the lower left side toward or within the foundation. The shadow is the subconscious or the parts of ourselves we may deny or hide away. The shadow acts as a portal to transformation and new levels of consciousness.
Colors on the left will also tell you about any psychic and spiritual gifts that you may have! Purple tends to correspond to claircognizance, indigo to clairvoyance and astral projection, light purple to clairvoyance and aura reading, magenta to clairaudience, just to name a few! Spirit Guides, Angels, and loved ones on the other side most often will appear on the left side of your aura painting. I often see them as orbs over the left shoulder. Sometimes they appear as symbolic shapes within the aura itself. Sometimes, they appear as both! Many spirit guides have a message to share, other times they simple want me to confirm they are there so that you can fully open yourself to personal communication with them.
The Right: External World
The right side of your painting corresponds to what is outside of yourself, and how you may align or not with the energy around you.
This is where you may see energy picked up from other people and places, as they can stick around in this section. (This is your reminder to cleanse your aura!)
Colors at your right side can also give insight into what you’re offering or putting out into the world.
If you’re wondering whether you’re closing a chapter or releasing the past, look to your lower right side near your foundation. Symbolic messages may appear as shapes like letters, animals, even human figures, as clues for you to understand what your aura is communicating to you.
The Very Center
Sometimes, your Soul comes through for your aura session, right in the middle of your painting. This isn’t the case for everyone, but when it does happen, it’s most often because you’re going through an awakening or are moving through deep healing. It can come through because loved ones and Angels are trying to reach you, and your Soul is opening a clearer channel. The Soul can also appear in your aura because you’re in the midst of an important karmic shift.
External Orbs
Some aura paintings feature little balls of color above the left or right shoulder.
Your left shoulder is where your spirits, loved ones, Angels, fairies, Earth elementals, extraterrestrials, and any other being from a different realm will appear. Different colors have different meaning, and each one is channeled during your session, so there isn’t a set interpretation for the orbs.
Your right shoulder is where doorways and opportunities appear. This can correspond to an inspired idea or intention, or a fated moment of alignment to come. Again, psychic information comes through in a session, and these do not have a set color meaning.
Arch of Color
This corresponds to an energy or vibe you’re exuding out to the world. This could be due to a burst of strong emotion or being tapped into something spiritual. Performers for example may arch color out to their audience, like an extension of their auric cloud. Members of the audience may feel sentimentally touched by the music, or they might feel fired up and excited. There is a shared experience because of the performer’s energy projected outward.
When this color matches your aura, it indicates you’re expressing yourself authentically. However, when the colors differ, it might indicate putting on a sort of energetic mask. Understanding this feature of your aura helps you reconnect with your true self and live a more freeing life.
